Republican legislators in Arizona are attempting to pass legislation that forces transgender people to only use public restrooms, dressing rooms and showers associated with the gender listed on their birth certificate. According to the Associated Press, conservative lawmakers are proposing the legislation in response to a human rights bill passed by the city of Phoenix which prohibits gender identity discrimination in public accommodations. (via Arizona bill would jail transgender people for using the ‘wrong’ bathroom | The Raw Story)

ugh, is there any way to petition against this? >:(

questions for pop culture pagans pt 2

phillypagan:

kissingcuteboys:

ok I get that PC magick includes using figures from pop culture to channel magic thru (ex an Anastasia spell for memory idk)

BUT

how does this work when these figures aren’t real? they aren’t gods or anything, just cartoons & movie characters. how does this work?

also, if one were to go about doing a Studio Ghibli-esque alter/worship, how would they do that??

(again not judging just really curious/confused)

Different people have different answers. Some go hard-polytheist, and say that no, the figures are actually real. I think a slightly more common view is that if you feed something attention/energy/magic/devotion, it gains power, and that’s how we got the ‘old gods’ and now we’re just doing it with new thoughts/characters. Others view the pop culture entities as aspects of the psyche (archetypes if you will) which are more convenient to connect to than sterile-sounding psychological concepts (easier to honor Nighmare Moon than it is to sit down, list my flaws, where they come from, and talk about my id). Basically, maaaaybe they are real, and maaaaaybe they aren’t, and maaaaaaaybe probably it’s something in between. As for a Studio Ghibli altar, pictures and figures are a good start~

And here I was not even knowing this was enough of a thing to have its own name.

I knew it was a thing, just didn’t know the name XD.

Visiting the SCP Wiki After A Long Absence… WHOA, WHAT DID YOU PEOPLE DO TO 40?!?

Long ramble from a very occasional SCP reader under the cut, though mainly just about my own initial reaction.  [Short version:  They changed SCP 40, and I guess it’s ultimately for the best, but it’s still going to take some getting used to (and yes, I know SCP is loose to no continuity, anyway :-p).]

Well, today has proven to be a rather embarrassing but eye-opening day.

Commission for Divides on Da

Mallow was taking an adventure in the forest when she seemed to have tripped and got her self stuck in a hole.

BUT WAIT! Something sparkling caught her eye while being stuck there. A ruby jeweled necklace and a trail of gold peices leading off farther in this underground hole.

Now if she could only get herself unstuck and follow that trail….Who knows what adventures and treasures await her there?

That ass shot, those nice and massive breast…And she’s pretty dang stuck too~!

There is too much ‘yes’ in this image to ignore…=w=

LOL, what’s funny is that when I first commissioned this drawing, I expected those to be the main appeal of the picture… yet in the end it’s her expression of wide-eyed-wonder that makes this oh-so-perfect for me <3.

(And yes, that previous post was designed to be a little intentionally “Look, this is an ADVERTISEMENT!”  :-p.)

That crazy girl, always getting herself into all KINDS of sticky situations…

Seriously, though, a better explanation can be found here:  http://mallowbunny.deviantart.com/journal/Explanation-on-my-Job-bills-Commissions-367689909

Those of you familiar with previous efforts of mine to give the girl free advertising should know what a wonderful artist she is and that she’s totally worth the money.  On top of that, I get the impression that a lot of people here are no stranger to the need to escape an anxiety trigger.  So… what are you people waiting for?  Ask her for something!

Like most people, I have my pet theories about why tumblr is such a clusterfuck of identities and petty politics, and why so many people on tumblr engage in bizarre and reactionary behavior well past their teenage years. Even taking into account the Greater Internet Fuckward Theory, tumblr culture is of a very specific vein; the vilification of skepticism, the rejection of human empathy, the furious masturbation to textbook psychology issues to the point where you lose touch with the real world. The hydra has many heads; otherkins, transethnics, sapiosexuals, transtrenders, white knights, and social justice assholes from all walks of life, but at the heart of it is that one word that makes this damn website so infamous: privilege.

My frustration with Tumblr social activism came to a head when I was attacked for caring about what college Calliope Wong got into. That was something that made me ask “What in the actual fuck are we fighting for?” It’s not enough to mourn the dead - what the hell happened to “fight like hell for the living?” Sending a trans girl to college is important. It says that there is a life beyond sorrow - a life of dreams and aspirations. A life where we’re not just weathering horror upon horror until death brings us to oblivion or the afterlife, but where we stone by stone lay a tower on the moral arc of the universe so that it bends its long way toward justice.

I will NOT compromise my activism by being so obsessed with death and horror that I forget about life and hope. NOT EVER.

Dreams save us. Dreams lift us up and transform us. And on my soul, I swear… until my dream of a world where dignity, honor, and justice becomes the reality we all share — I’ll never stop fighting. Ever.” —Superman

…That response is fuckin’ beautiful and right and I would like it on my blog. ;_;

Can we talk about how Elementary casted a trans*woman as a trans*woman

Can we talk about how they didn’t make her storyline about how she is trans* AND she was seen as something desirable

Can we talk about how she had OCD but it wasn’t something that was made fun of or a big deal at all, nor did it define her character

Can we talk about how in the scene where Watson was changing on camera, they didn’t make it sexual nor objectified her body whatsoever.

Can we talk about the huge amount of minorities in the Elementary cast, ALONG WITH A MAIN CHARACTER BEING A WOMAN OF COLOR

Can we talk about how changing Watson into a woman didn’t change the dynamic of Sherlock and Watson’s relationship whatsoever, thus showing that a man and a woman can be friends without any romantic entanglements whatsoever, and the writers intend to keep it that way

Can we just talk about HOW FUCKING PERFECT ELEMENTARY IS AND IF YOU DON’T WATCH IT JUST BECAUSE WATSON IS A WOMAN THAN YOU’RE MISSING OUT

… holy shit I need to watch this show.

… holy shit I need to watch this show.

The other question everybody asks is, why doesn’t she just leave? Why didn’t I walk out? I could have left any time. To me, this is the saddest and most painful question that people ask, because we victims know something you usually don’t: It’s incredibly dangerous to leave an abuser. Because the final step in the domestic violence pattern is kill her. Over 70 percent of domestic violence murders happen after the victim has ended the relationship, after she’s gotten out, because then the abuser has nothing left to lose. Other outcomes include long-term stalking, even after the abuser remarries; denial of financial resources; and manipulation of the family court system to terrify the victim and her children, who are regularly forced by family court judges to spend unsupervised time with the man who beat their mother. And still we ask, why doesn’t she just leave?

“Why domestic violence victims don’t leave” -  Leslie Morgan Steiner  (via eaaao)

Read the comments on almost any story about a woman who was attacked/killed by partner, and I 100% guarantee you will see one that implies that the victim is at fault for not leaving or not leaving sooner. DON’T BLAME THE VICTIM.

(via stfuconservatives) Or “just get a restraining order.” What the hell is a piece of paper to an abuser? (via native-detroiter)

Not to mention getting a restraining order isn’t easy. once you try to get it and fail HOW FUCKED ARE YOU?

(via fuckyeahfeminists)

You know what? even if you GET A RESTRAINING ORDER SUCCESSFULLY it’s not a guarantee! Guess what? Abusers break the law! All the time! They can still show up at your school! Or at your house! And if you can’t prove it, guess what? You’re fucked! The burden of proof is on you! Especially if you’re a minor and your abuser is an adult. These things are not that simple.

Did somebody say this?

Did somebody actually FUCKING SAY THIS?!?

Did somebody just call out the fucking, “Hardship X > your hardship so STFU!”  dismissal bullshit?!?

Did somebody just confirm that, yes, backlash can be bad too, if taken too far?

Did somebody just point out how sometimes the reason people take accusations of “privilege” as an insult and profanity is because other people USE it as an insult and profanity?

Did somebody just simultaneously acknowledge not only the problems with appropriation, but also one of the MAJOR causes for it?

There are SO MANY THINGS right with this.  I… am literally at a loss for words right now.

(Side Note:  I’ve actually been working on a long speech about how trying to quantify privilege and oppression as if they were simple, “rankable” concepts seldom helps the oppressed, and can often do quite a bit to hurt them.  I may yet finish touching it up and post it on here at some point.  But for now, this?  Fact is, this probably does a far better job making the point that I EVER could O_O.)
