Republican legislators in Arizona are attempting to pass legislation that forces transgender people to only use public restrooms, dressing rooms and showers associated with the gender listed on their birth certificate. According to the Associated Press, conservative lawmakers are proposing the legislation in response to a human rights bill passed by the city of Phoenix which prohibits gender identity discrimination in public accommodations. ok I get that PC magick includes using figures from pop culture to channel magic thru (ex an Anastasia spell for memory idk)

how does this work when these figures aren’t real? they aren’t gods or anything, just cartoons & movie characters. how does this work?

also, if one were to go about doing a Studio Ghibli-esque alter/worship, how would they do that??

Different people have different answers. Some go hard-polytheist, and say that no, the figures are actually real. I think a slightly more common view is that if you feed something attention/energy/magic/devotion, it gains power, and that’s how we got the ‘old gods’ and now we’re just doing it with new thoughts/characters. Others view the pop culture entities as aspects of the psyche (archetypes if you will) which are more convenient to connect to than sterile-sounding psychological concepts (easier to honor Nighmare Moon than it is to sit down, list my flaws, where they come from, and talk about my id). Basically, maaaaybe they are real, and maaaaaybe they aren’t, and maaaaaaaybe probably it’s something in between. As for a Studio Ghibli altar, pictures and figures are a good start~

Long ramble from a very occasional SCP reader under the cut, though mainly just about my own initial reaction. [Short version: They changed SCP 40, and I guess it’s ultimately for the best, but it’s still going to take some getting used to (and yes, I know SCP is loose to no continuity, anyway :-p).]

So, yeah, SCP 40 has been one of my favorite SCPs for awhile, so when TV Tropes manages to lure me (at least briefly) back to the site, I have to check her out to see if any changes have been made. And BOY HOWDY have they XD. This is going to take some getting used to, although I can certainly appreciated why the changes (and MASSIVE depowering) were necessary.

Does seem some aspects of her back story got official clarifications I’m not entirely comfortable with (like why she has the pink hair and weird eye), but other than that, I think I’ll ultimately learn to appreciate this.

She does seem to have lost her “adorable but nightmarish” status she used to have (seems her power works slower now, so no more sudden surprises, she seems to have lost her telepathy and the power incontinence that went with it, and oh yeah: No more evidence of mentally unstable episodes), instead just becoming adorable. This means the new version lacks something the old version had… but it also has a lot the old version lacked. That and, you know, not feeling like a friggin’ Mary Sue (albeit a Mary Sue I loved anyway) anymore.

I do wonder why she’s still classified as “Euclid” with these alterations, though…

My frustration with Tumblr social activism came to a head when I was attacked for caring about what college Calliope Wong got into. That was something that made me ask “What in the actual fuck are we fighting for?” It’s not enough to mourn the dead - what the hell happened to “fight like hell for the living?” Sending a trans girl to college is important. It says that there is a life beyond sorrow - a life of dreams and aspirations. A life where we’re not just weathering horror upon horror until death brings us to oblivion or the afterlife, but where we stone by stone lay a tower on the moral arc of the universe so that it bends its long way toward justice.

Read the comments on almost any story about a woman who was attacked/killed by partner, and I 100% guarantee you will see one that implies that the victim is at fault for not leaving or not leaving sooner. DON’T BLAME THE VICTIM.

You know what? even if you GET A RESTRAINING ORDER SUCCESSFULLY it’s not a guarantee! Guess what? Abusers break the law! All the time! They can still show up at your school! Or at your house! And if you can’t prove it, guess what? You’re fucked! The burden of proof is on you! Especially if you’re a minor and your abuser is an adult. These things are not that simple.

Did somebody actually FUCKING SAY THIS?!?

Did somebody just call out the fucking, “Hardship X > your hardship so STFU!” dismissal bullshit?!?

Did somebody just confirm that, yes, backlash can be bad too, if taken too far?

Did somebody just point out how sometimes the reason people take accusations of “privilege” as an insult and profanity is because other people USE it as an insult and profanity?

Did somebody just simultaneously acknowledge not only the problems with appropriation, but also one of the MAJOR causes for it?

There are SO MANY THINGS right with this. I… am literally at a loss for words right now.

(Side Note: I’ve actually been working on a long speech about how trying to quantify privilege and oppression as if they were simple, “rankable” concepts seldom helps the oppressed, and can often do quite a bit to hurt them. I may yet finish touching it up and post it on here at some point. But for now, this? Fact is, this probably does a far better job making the point that I EVER could O_O.)
